High Adventure Trip 2022 Introduction

Troop 288, through a national lottery, was awarded a 2022, 7-day high adventure expedition slot to attend the Philmont Scout Ranch

When:
7-Day expedition will arrive at Philmont on: 7/9/2022 and will depart Philmont on 7/16/2022

What:
Crews on 7-day treks will backpack for 5 days in the backcountry, with an arrival/departure day in Base Camp. Crews will be welcomed and accompanied by a Philmont Ranger for their first 3 days and will participate in program activities throughout their trek. 7-day treks include multiple itineraries over 50 miles, as well as the 3 hours of conservation work necessary to earn the Philmont Arrowhead Patch.

Where:
The Philmont Scout Ranch is located in Cimarron, New Mexico and includes 214 square miles of rugged 
wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rockies. 

Who:
One crew (crew size = 8 to 12 participants) from Troop 288 is being recruited (based on their hiking and camping abilities). The crew will consist of at least two BSA registered Adult Advisors (Mr. Peine and Mr. Keane). The maximum number of adults 
(21 years and over) is four (4) per crew. Each adult must be a registered member of the BSA. The crew may consist of up to eight (8) Scouts, however, the Scout Youth need to be 14 years old OR 13 years old and completed 8th grade by 7/9/2022. 

Costs:
The 7-Day Reservation fee is $1,000.00/person (*travel and lodging arrangements are separate costs) with payment schedule as follows:

  • Deposit of $150.00/person due 1/30/2021
  • Advance of $425.00/person due 10/1/2021
  • Balance of $425.00/person due 3/1/2022

The Philmont Experience:
Philmont Scout Ranch offers a unique experience that is not risk-free. Knowledgeable staff will instruct all participants in safety measures to be followed. Be prepared to listen to and carefully follow these safety measures and to accept responsibility for the health and safety of yourself and others. Each participant must be able to carry a 35 to 50-pound pack while hiking 5 to 12 miles per day in an isolated mountain wilderness ranging from 6,500 to 12,500 feet in elevation.

Summer/autumn climatic conditions include temperatures from 30 to 100 degrees, low humidity (10 to 30 percent), and frequent, sometimes severe, afternoon thunderstorms. 

Activities include horseback riding, rock climbing and rappelling, challenge events, pole climbing, muzzle loading shooting, 12-gauge trap shooting, .30-06 shooting, trail building, mountain biking, and other activities that have potential for injury. Philmont requires that all participants meet the height/weight limits found on the BSA Medical Form and the website.
